Water changes and sand bed Empty Water changes and sand bed

I have been able to help with the last two water changes of the 210 at the science center. Very Happy I was able to siphon of quite a bit of the red slime, but I am wondering how much disturbing of the sand bed do most people do when siphoning? I've been pouring (pardon the pun) through magazines and forums and it seems like some activity to raise the demitrius into the water column is the way to go. Do most of you move sand when doing a water change?

There isn't a great deal of clean -up crew for the size of the tank. I'm hoping we can get some more powerheads in to increase flow- it just takes time.

How deep is the sandbed? I always siphon mine, but it's a shallow just for looks sandbed, with a deep one that hasn't been messed with a lot you would want to do just a little at a time and suck all that crap into the siphon, try not to throw it around the tank. Or you can just do the top layer of it to clean it off.

Its a nice deep one, but we were stirring it during changes when we were getting things right over the summer.

Go ahead and siphon off the cruddy spots. I always (in my tank) lose sand due to siphoning off the top layer.

Thanks, I was hoping I was not doing something I shouldn't. I put the sand back in that was siphoned out and gently blew on the corals to remove any sand they collected.

The first set of baffles on the sump appear to have broken at the joint and Frank has them propped up. We had a fiasco today with someone formerly of the club pouring 20 gallons of freshwater into the sump. We did another 15 gal water change to try to get the salinity back up.

That makes about 40 gallon water change in 2 days. I don't know if that is very good, but not much we could do about it.

Its not bad, and in an emergency sort of normal

when my tank crashed I was changing 50% every day for a week, trying to make things right.
