Phosphate troubles
My cyanobacteria outbreak over the past 3-6 weeks is killing me. But i think i know what to do to stop it. I have read website after website. All i have is a RO unit no DI unit. SO my Phosphate are .5 right out of the RO water I have a Coralife Pure-Flo II RO 25gpd unit not sure if i need to add a DI unit to it i can get one for 40 bucks. or just say the hell with it and get a new unit from http://www.thefilterguys.biz/ro_di_systems.htm and get a 75gpd unit. and i need a new skimmer to. I have a coralife super skimmer 65. It is to small for my 75g tank i'm sure it can not get the Elevated nutrient levels out fastenough befor the cyano sucks it up. So im looking at the MSX 200 or the Reef Octopus Extreme 200. But im not sure if i need the new skimmer or the RO/DI unit frist what do you guys think?
and the add part is my cyano grow's the fastest in my high flow zones

Re: Phosphate troubles
Well if your water has phosphates I would focus on that first. That said I've seen plenty of cases of people with no phosphates, super high flow, no nitrates, great skimmer, etc still fighting cyano. What is traditionally repeated over and over in this hobby is not always the case obviously. A di or new ro unit is a cheaper investment than the skimmer so I would try that first unless you can afford both but I would agree you need a bigger skimmer, couldn't tell you which is better. I've never dealt with cyano myself except a little in a tank I helped set up when it was new and then all I did was suck it out once and add a powerhead which did the trick.

Re: Phosphate troubles
We had one of those coralife skimimers. It was good for our 55 but I can see that it wouldn't be sufficient for anything larger. I agree about upgrading your RO to RODI. It seems like just adding DI would be enough but I'm not totally sure about that. You can "skim" yourself by doing frequent W/C's (sucking out as much algae when you do) but you need good water going in in order for that to help.

Re: Phosphate troubles
the coralife RO unit is fine I would just get another canister and add DI resin to it but myself I would dump using Coralifes media I used it and IMO it's Just there DI resin I could never get my TDS to zero using there resin, look over at the waterguys they have pretty High grade media and resin and better membranes
Re: Phosphate troubles

Re: Phosphate troubles
Thats great!
I dont know if this is good or bad to say, but I remember reading on RC that cyanno might very well have nothing to do with high phosphates and other nutrients in the way that hair algea does. If i had time, id search for you :-) Doesnt mean its true though, everyone on RC always states things like there known facts... That being said, never hurts to have a good RODI and skimmer!

Re: Phosphate troubles
Dan, check out filter guys... they have a booster pump. I have well water and without a booster pump, I got maybe a maximum 40psi. ..when water in holding tank dropped, so did the pressure.
By adding a booster pump, my water pressure stays at almost 100psi. I can do 14-20 gals per evening or more if i want. I drop my waste water lline in the washing machine and use that for washing clothes so its not all wasted!.
