Double Trouble Fluval Edge
Hola! I decided to be insane and start up a Fluval Edge nano reef next to my Fluval Edge freshwater planted tank. The fresh water has the simple mod of replacing the stock halogen lights with indoor/outdoor 4,500K LED lights. The saltwater was more complicated. I removed the 'lighting arm' and stripped out the LED/Halogen sockets. I wired in a 50/50 18 watt CF, and then rewired a ballast to add a 9 watt pure 10,000K, to that I added a RS Extreme Moonlight (this is a great little light except for the fact that the brackets it came with don't hold the light, suck). Added a heater, using the hang on the back for pure mechanical filtration and flow. Ten pounds of black marine sand, six pounds or so of live rock, and off we go!!! Cycled in a week! Never got cloudy, just a little spike in all the numbers. Weekly water changes of about 2 gallons.
Here they are:
All lights on:
Moonlight only (hard to photo):
EDIT: sorry, don't know how to resize the photos for this forum!

Neat setup! I like the salt/fresh next to each other and both with black sand. What's the coral in front by the clownfish?

Thanks! That is a Green Wall Coral (much like a Green Torch Coral) that I got down at Ocean Devotion, it is awesome.

Love it! If I ever do an edge, it'll be for Dwarf Seahorses with some tiny seagrass species

Ack! Dwarf seahorses in a fluval would be soooooo cute! I'd bet they'd be happy too since the waterflow would be just right. You'd still need a light mod, but probably not an extreme one.

Here are some shots from in my tank!
This is a very, very, very tiny Orange Crush Clownfish that I got from All Reef. He was born and bred right here in the Twin Cities!

Nice closeups, you've got some pretty cherry stuff in there. They all doing fine with lower light? They look good. Is that the top of that wall/frogspawny thing with the clown? That's really cool looking.

Yeah that's the top of the wall with the clown. Everything is growing like MADNESS! Honestly I can't believe it.

How is that tank for cleaning? How do you scrape off the glass and such?

Re: Double Trouble Fluval Edge
I've never had a big problem cleaning the glass (despite the extra surface). I have a magnetic scrubber that I use, and then when I do water changes I give it a little more of hand scrubbing by just reaching in.
