Eggs! Lots of Eggs! Empty Eggs! Lots of Eggs!

Post by HSCmember Thu Mar 26, 2015 10:34 pm

One of my Watchman Gobies hasn't been out to eat, it is the smaller of the two, so I went looking for the body. I carefully lifted up a corner of the rock they live under ,and discovered the missing goby and a huge cache of eggs attached to the bottom of the rock. There isn't much in the tank, a few hermits, one cleaner shrimp, some corals and the gobies. I know there are pods in there but they are pretty big. They are big gobies, more dull olive yellow but have very blue- almost fluorescent spots. One is much larger than the other- is that the female?

Cool! The females are usually bigger, but I don't know specifically for gobies.

My male bangaii has a mouthful of eggs right now. This is the second time he's had a mouthful. I don't know what happened last time, but we never saw babies, I assume they were instantly eaten. That's what will happen this time too, we're not set up for breeding.

Both gobies are out and about now and hungry. I don't have the heart to lift up the rock and take a peek.

The eggs hatched and the bangaii carried the fry around in his mouth.  We could see them pretty good in there, looked like little bangaiis.  Then one day no more fry and the bagaii was eating again.  Now it looks like he's carrying eggs again.  He's goes 2-3 weeks without eating during this period, must get pretty hungry.
