Kitty litter? Are you serious?
I bought a 20 gal long off craigs list to upgrade my refugium. I have
been looking for designs, and I come across an entry on 3Reef to use
Miracle Mud it contains the natural additives and trace elements that
will leach into your DT water. I called WOF and they do not have any. I
called Morgan and he suggested I speak to Jay, he is using this in his
tank. I am pretty sure Frank mentioned this at our April meeting in his
55.
I then found a thread that walmart cheap unscented kitty litter is
the same clay as Miracle Mud for a fraction of the price.
Here is the quote off of 3reef "The mud is full of trace minerals etc. that will slowly and naturally
leach into the water, eliminating the need to dose extra trace elements
other than those provided by a regular waterchange. The mangroves seem to dig it too."
Do
you have any input or can you direct me?
Or other suggestions for
a good design.

hmm... might work... I don't think the mud is needed in the first place and most of them are just marketing ploys. Id say test it out on a tank with no livestock and watch the parameters... see what happens.

Well two weeks now since install of 3 inches of kitty litter under an inch of aragonite. The tank is immaculate and all life forms are flourishing. Maybe we need a few tons in the gulf of mexico.

Re: Kitty litter? Are you serious?
Well it has been 3 weeks, things look very good in the 55. I have begun moving lots of things out of my 29 biocube because it has a cyano problem. Jim thefilterguys suggested a 50% WC weekly for 3 weeks. I am two weeks into this and no change.
Matt correctly pointed out to me that if I am putting the same things in both tanks so my cyano (red slime in the 29 cannot be caused by my water, storage tanks etc. ) cannot be caused by storage containers or my RODI water. I love a good mystery. I will figure it out.
See link below for more info on the kitty litter.

Summary: 55 with Walmart red back cheapo Kitty litter is doing marvelously. 29 bc has a cyano problem.
