Drilling of the 29g
Well just so you all know that if you try and drill a 29 this is what can happen, Tempered glass. So to recap 29's and 55's cant be drilled!!!
So I will be looking for a 29 that is drilled

Re: Drilling of the 29g
I was wondering about backing up the glass with a wood block. I have a drill press that has an adjustable table. Matt and I are supposed to experiment this summer. He has a couple of safety glass leakers that we can experiment with.

Wow that sucks. I have a 29 thats drilled that I did. If you want it Garrett its yours. I'll take a pic of it later and post. Nannooknot sure what you mean about backing the glass with wood block. I threw an old pair of jeans in mine to caught the glass as it fell.

Re: Drilling of the 29g
Ya Lyle that would be great, I use a 2 blocks when I drill and clamp them so the glass dont fall
Re: Drilling of the 29g
I watched the youtube video on drilling safety glass. You could see the glass flex as he was pressing down. If you put a backer block behind the glass as you are pushing, the glass would not flex. Care would have to be taken, going very s-l-o-w-l-y. I am tenacious and I don't give in to defeat. Re: Drilling of the 29g
I though when drilling glass it was bad to force the drill. You should let the drill do the work. If the glass is flexing I would think to much pressure being applied.

Re: Drilling of the 29g
Ya you just want to let the weight of the drill basicly do the drilling not much pressure.

This would be a perfect time to talk your spouse into letting you buy the frag tank that I have.

Re: Drilling of the 29g
When drilling glass try to use water to keep drill bit cool that will help with the cutting. Its the same procces when i drill tile. if i use to much pressure it will crack the tile. And a backer helps alot. I used to have glass drilling bits kit i will look for it and if I can find it anybody can use it.

Re: Drilling of the 29g
I use water and a clamp 2 pieces of wood on the glass. I have drilled 5 other tanks so I know it is not the way I do it. It was just tempered glass and that cant be drilled.
Re: Drilling of the 29g
Nano have you drilled tempered glass before?

That would be awsome Lyle Ya I will take it. I build a stand for the one I had so I would not need the stand. I am not sure when I will get to fargo but when I do I will swing by. Maybe have to make a day trip soon!!!LOL

Re: Drilling of the 29g
It could use some work but at least if you need to drill any more holes you know its not tempered. Its got a selfadhesive backing on it, overflow box is glass thats sharp as I cut some scape glass I had laying around. I have a glass top for it too if you want that. Plumbing needs a piece to splice it back together, didn't put one of them things in to take it apart. I have to work this week so won't get home till 3:30-4.

Re: Drilling of the 29g
Oh I will get it all cleaned up No I would not need the glas tops I am going to make a canopy for it.
Re: Drilling of the 29g
I would not attempt drilling tempered glass EVER. If there are holes in a sheet of tempered glass they were drilled before it was tempered. Due to the fabrication process to make the glass tempered, it causes it to hold together with tension points. As soon as one of those points is broken the glass will basically explode into many little pieces... There are different levels of temper so basically the higher the temper level the higher your risk of breaking the glass. Unfortunately you can't tell the amout of temper by just looking at the glass.
The best bet is to see if the tank is tempered with polarized glasses. If it is, don't even attempt to drill. Sell the tempered tank and get a different one that isn't tempered so you will be able to drill it.
