Does anyone have a Kill-a-watt meter that I could borrow?

Re: Looking for a thing
I dont think anyone in our club has one but it would be neat to have. Maybe our next swap if we make some money on the raffles and what not the club could buy one. or a lux meter too would be nice.

Re: Looking for a thing
So here's the deal. We just moved into our house in November. Since then we have had two electricity bills. Both of them have been over $100 dollars! After that we cut back on using hot water, how often we were washing/drying clothes, and making sure the lights were off. Well, the newest bill is even higher than the last!!!! We don't know what to think. I don't even have a full aquarium system up yet, just some rock curing in a 20h, with a pump and a heater. We are suspecting it's our fridge, and I will know in a week. I think a weeks worth of useage would be a good baseline.

Re: Looking for a thing
Wow... trade you, our electric bill is about 200.00 a month so maybe I will need to use(rent) that thing when you are done.

Re: Looking for a thing
We are used to our electric bills being less then $85 a month, but that was at an appartment without a water heater, and my aquarium right next to the sliding door during winter. But all of our family members are running close to $65, so we are dumb founded.

Man I wish ours was that low. Do they use lights???or candels for light???LOL
Re: Looking for a thing
I posted this somewhere but it disappeared- Garrett are you pulling something on us again?
Many years ago we rented a house and when it got cold we had horrendous heating bills. Upon investigation we found a space heater in the uninsulated crawl space under the house. Check for something running that you aren't used to having.
Are you on off-peak? That makes a big difference in cost.

Re: Looking for a thing
No that is no lie our bill last month was 198.00 we have nothing pluged in that would be taking that much. I think I am going to call BEC and ask them about it.
No we only have one heat source so off-peak is not an option.

Re: Looking for a thing
Big difference in price. They really discount for off-peak useage. The other thing to do is after you have had service for a year, they will average it out so you aren't crippled in the winter by huge bills. That helps a lot.- you have to ask for that.

I may look into how much it would be to have that installed.

Re: Looking for a thing
We have an apt and ours runs around 200 all the time and see a bill around 300 2 times a yr. I really can't see a tank using that much and one of these days I will get bored and figure out why ours are so high. We have base board heat and water heater, dishwasher and washer/dryer so may be its just me.

Re: Looking for a thing
At my new place the bill is about $100, typically $94 at least for the last two months. Heat and hot water are included in rent so that is not a part of the electric bill at all.
At my old place electricity was included for the first 4 years. They decided to change the lease to not include electric and I found out that my ills were aroung $260 for the summer months because the place isn't insulated at all. Winter was over $150 as well due to baseboard heat. That was the reason for the move...
My $75G tank adds about $20 to the electric bill each month. The rest is the washer/drier, dishwasher, and 3 high-power PCs that run 24 hours a day...lol.

Re: Looking for a thing
The last time that I lived in a house, my electricity bill was about $65-70/mo. In the apartment, with an aquarium, average $70-75. So I'm not sure what to think now. I guess I'll see what the usage on my fridge looks like in a few days.
I think I'm going to find out about getting off-peak put in. I think it may be worth while in the long run.

Re: Looking for a thing
The only thing you can have on off peak is your heating you can't have your whole house and the price would not be that big a a differance
Re: Looking for a thing
My bill is usually around $100-$120 but that's with 2-3 tanks running, plus iguana lights, washer/dryer, computer and tvs.

Re: Looking for a thing
We have a fairly large house - over little over 3,000 sq ft, at least 3 televisions running in the evening, primary heat is electric plenum on a gas furnace, electric bird bath outside, electric heat, electric water heater, electric clothes dryer, dish washer, air conditioning... six people all adults or teenagers.
But: heat, water heater, clothes dryer, air conditioner are all on off-peak. Our electric bill averages out to about $200 a month.
You can after a year of usage have them figure out an average and get billed that way.
We find that we are actually still using some of the surplus $ from this summer yet.
