Frag Tank?

Ok I am setting up my frag tank I forgot to ask you all yesturday. I am not planning on puting any sand or LR in my frag tank should I put a little HOB filter in the sump??

does it run in your system or are you doing a nano type thing with its own sump and pump?

it is on it own in a differant room.

Garrett are you talking skimmer or a regular filter type. I'd put a little skimmer on. Look at vishnu's he had that little skimmer on his frag tank

Ya I have a saeclone skimmer I am going to put on it but was just wondering if I should use some kind of filter? I may just put some LR rubble in the sump to help out to.

if you did rubble, i would say you will be fine with rubble and skimmer. Try and keep the bio load lower, fish are hard on that and also spot feeding corals can be bad. Just keep up on water changes if you think your bio load will be high.

Garret I dont have sand or LR in the frag tank itself. I have live rock and a refugium in the sump that has some sand. Like other said, if you are not going to keep any fish, you could get away without live rock or a skimmer if you do water changes regularly.
Despite having skimmer, liverock and refugium I do 30% water change in my frag tank every 2 weeks.

Thanks Vishnu I am going to have a few fish in it so I guess I will put some LR in the sump but not sure about the sand? I do have some in a bucket in the shed I could wash it good and add a little bit.

Yes. Putting some LR is a good idea. If the sand is dry then I would wash it with RODI water multiple times and then put a layer 1 inch or so in the refugium. Ideally you would want a deep sand bad to create anaerobic conditions to remove nitrates but it also means you need to keep it clean and make sure the flow is good. So the safe way is to put a shallow bed for pods and mangroves and aesthetic reasons in the refugium. If the sand is wet, I would wash it with either used tank water or fresh salt water multiple times before putting it in. Make sure there is no foul spell coming from the sand.
