The Last Reef: Cities Beneath the Sea Premieres

Following successful screenings at the GSCA and the Moody Gardens Digital Cinema Symposium, The Last Reef: Cities Beneath the Sea, is now launching worldwide. The Last Reef was directed by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas, who previously collaborated on the enormously successful Wild Ocean, which received the Earthwatch Institutes Film of the Year award in 2009 and has surpassed $40 million in worldwide box office. In The Last Reef, Cresswell and McNicholas take audiences on a thrilling journey through the spectacular world of coral reefs. Filmed by leading underwater 3D cinematographer, D.J. Roller, using the worlds first underwater 4K macro 3D camera rig, miniscule creatures appear massive on the giant screen and these cities beneath the sea are brought to life in unprecedented clarity and detail.

Wild Ocean captured the incredible struggle for survival in the open sea, said Cresswell. With The Last Reef, we have taken a unique but very different approach that allows audiences to experience the color, diversity and interconnectedness of life in reef communities. According to McNicholas, Underwater macro photography in 3D is something thats never really been seen in any format, let alone on the giant screen. We believe it turned out spectacularly well.

The cinematography of The Last Reef represents a contrast to Wild Ocean in terms of the filmmaking environment and style. Wild Ocean was filmed in turbulent waters off the coast of South Africa, resulting in a grittier film in terms of both cinematography and subject matter, said Don Kempf, president of Giant Screen Films and producer of both films. The Last Reef, on the other hand, was mostly filmed in the calm, clear waters of the South Pacific and the naturally colorful reef environment. Like Wild Ocean, though, The Last Reef has a unique narrative approach that makes it stand out among underwater documentaries.

While The Last Reefs stunning 3D imagery delivers an engrossing experience from start to finish, the films inspiring message offers a hopeful vision for these seemingly distant worlds. While these ancient, exotic havens face the threat of extinction, The Last Reef reminds viewers of their incredible power to rebuild and ultimately poses the question, "what can we do to help them?"

The Last Reef is a production of Giant Screen Films, Yes/No Productions, and Liquid Pictures and is directed by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas. The film is distributed by Giant Screen Films and opened worldwide in February 2012.
