Possible Adoption - Red Ear Slider
I have a Red Ear Slider turtle I've had forever. She is huge and within a year or two of outgrowing the 75 gallon tank she's in. I have been attempting to find some place to adopt her out to but have come up empty handed.
I had a thought and I know someone here has contacts there, but would the Science Center in Bemidji maybe have an interest in adopting a turtle to add to their aquatic life exhibits? She is a really nice turtle and eats anything, stick food, goldfish, etc. Very easy to care for. I just don't have the room for the additional 75 gallon tank or an upgrade when she outgrows it...
Could someone maybe ask for me if they'd be interested or not? I'll adopt her out free. All she'll need is a tank as I don't really want to try travel that way with a glass tank in the back of my Ranger and honestly she could use a larger one anyway...

I'll check on it and get back to you. It seems highly likely that they'd be interested. Very generous of you!

Re: Possible Adoption - Red Ear Slider
I don't know about highly likely, RES are pretty much the most common aquatic turtle sold and most get dumped once they start getting huge, I had baby map turtles for a very short while and got rid of them because there was no way I was setting up multiple 125 gallon tanks when they got bigger and we lived in an apartment at the time. They were cute though. I know the minnesota herp society will take them once a month, they do charge a fee for hard to rehome common reptiles like sliders or iguanas but I think it's fairly small. I also don't have the room for another huge tank or I'd consider it. How big is she? Is it female for sure, laying eggs and whatnot?

She laid an egg then ate it . I can get measurements tomorrow if you'd like. She couldn't turn around in a 55G which is why I got the 75 for her. She is getting close to outgrowing that too though so she'd do great in a terrarium or a custom enclosure with a pond like area or something.
Thanks for the info and the help!

Sorry. Tiff knows her turtles. The HSC doesn't need any more red eared sliders.

Any other ideas? How do I get in contact with the MN Herp Society?
Thanks!

Re: Possible Adoption - Red Ear Slider
I saw a post about it on TCMAS. I'll look for it.
Wish I could take it. I love turtles. I always had them for pets when I was a kid. However, I do not have a large enough home for it and don't really want to buy one right now with Christmas and all.
Good luck.

Has their number under contact us, I assume they will call you back. There's also the info you'd need under adoption, only problem is you'd have to get the turtle to the cities on a certain day, otherwise maybe search on petfinder for reptiles and see which places take them and ask if they accept owner surrenders. Or there's always craigslist, put a post up and see if anyone is looking for one.
